Upcoming Dragon Movies
19-Oct-2006
While Pern fans are excited about the new Dragonriders
of Pern movie deal, it is by far not the only dragon movie looming on
the cinematic horizon.
Twentieth Century Fox is preparing to bring Eragon
by Christopher Paolini into the theatres on December 15 this year. Eragon
is a fantasy tale about a boy turned Dragon Rider, inspired in part by Anne McCaffrey's
Dragonriders of Pern and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.
Remarkably, the author was a teenager when writing the book. For more
details, pictures, and previews, see the recently updated official Eragon
Movie site.

Warner Brothers just optioned the book Here, There Be Dragons
by James A. Owen for the big screen with a projected release date of 2008.
This "story behind the stories"-type tale starts with three
strangers in England during World War I embarking on an adventure into the
world of fantasy. These three buddies in quest for dragons and other
fantasy creatures turn out to be J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles
Williams. For more details on the movie, see the interview
with producer David Goyer posted at the Narnia Fans site.
The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik
recently made a big splash on the movie news front as Peter Jackson (known
to fantasy fans for doing a superb job directing the LotR movies) acquired
the movie rights to it. The story
has been called a "cross between Patrick O'Brian and Anne McCaffrey",
featuring a dragon - rider pair during the era of the Napoleonic War.
According to Jackson, "'Temeraire' is a terrific meld of two
genres that I particularly love -- fantasy and historical epic."
For more details, see the Herald
Tribune article on the Temeraire movie deal. The projected release
date for this movie at this time is 2009.

This is only the latest in a series of efforts to bring Pern on screen.
The first effort for a Dragonriders of Pern show by Alliance Atlantis was
never realized. Eventually, the rights were sold. In 2002, Pern nearly
made it onto television, but work on the series was cancelled after a
controversy about Pern canon changes requested by the network. For more
details on these older deals and their difficulties, check out Sariel's
Pern TV/Movie News page.
