Heinlein Award for Anne & Elizabeth

Anne McCaffrey, along with Elizabeth Moon, is the winner of this year's Heinlein Award. Locus Online announced that she will be presented with her medal and certificate at the Writers of the Future event in August, but Anne's own website clarifies that she will not be able to attend that event due to health reasons.

The McCaffrey Quest trivia contest will be held again in October, this year with the topics Early Pern and Tower & the Hive.

Dragon*Con Updates

Due to other commitments and health issues, Anne has had to cancel her planned appearance at Dragon*Con this year. Todd McCaffrey will still be there and is planning on holding a Writer's Workshop again this year. The workshop will be limited to eight participants (first come, first serve).

Another Pern Book in the Works

According to rumors at the Pernese Friends, Meeting of Minds, and Anne McCaffrey Fans forums, Anne McCaffrey is working on another Pern novel. Time- and storyline are anyone's guess, but the story with the working title "New Era, Pern" has grown to at least 60,000 words so far.

Menolly's Songs

Tania Opland and Mike Freeman, the musicians behind the Masterharper of Pern CD, are working on a second CD with Menolly's songs, tentatively titled Dragonsongs. Their participation at DragonCon this year depends on the status of this project.

15 Years of WeyrFest

And another auspicious anniversary this year... WeyrFest will be celebrating its 15th year at Dragon*Con on Labor Day weekend this year. Guests for the birthday party include Anne and Todd McCaffrey, Jody Lynn Nye and Bill Fawcett.

40 Years of Pern

The first Pern story, the novella Weyr Search, was published in the Science Fiction magazine Analog in October 1967. That makes Pern 40 years old this year. Weyr Search won the Hugo Award in 1968 and was incorporated into the first Pern novel, Dragonflight, in 1968.
